Choosing the Right Built-In Oven
Single, Double or Compact Oven?
A single oven has one main cooking cavity and is the most common format for a built-in kitchen. Double ovens provide two separate cavities, allowing dishes to be cooked at different temperatures or using different functions at the same time.
Compact ovens use a shorter installation format and are often installed alongside a full-size oven, built-in coffee machine or warming drawer. Compact describes the appliance size rather than its cooking technology, so compact models can include conventional ovens, steam ovens and combination microwave ovens.
What Is a Combination Oven?
A combination oven uses more than one cooking technology. Combination microwave ovens provide conventional oven functions alongside microwave cooking, while combination steam ovens can use conventional dry heat and steam either separately or together.
Combination appliances may be compact or full height. If installation height is the main consideration, browse compact ovens and microwaves.
Pyrolytic, Catalytic or Steam Cleaning?
Pyrolytic cleaning uses a dedicated high-temperature cycle to break down baked-on grease and food residue into ash. Catalytic liners absorb and oxidise grease during cooking, while steam or humidity-assisted cleaning uses moisture to soften deposits before wiping.
Cleaning functions vary by model, so check the individual appliance specification rather than assuming that all ovens within the same range use the same system.
What Do Steam-Assisted Ovens Do?
Steam-assisted ovens combine conventional oven heat with additional moisture during selected cooking programmes. This differs from a dedicated steam oven or combination steam oven capable of fuller steam cooking.
For example, selected AEG SteamCrisp ovens combine conventional heat with steam during baking and roasting, while SteamPro appliances offer more extensive steam cooking functions. Miele conventional ovens can use Moisture Plus to introduce bursts of steam, while its DGC combination steam ovens provide both conventional oven and steam cooking functions.
Smart Ovens
Selected built-in ovens include Wi-Fi or app connectivity for functions such as cooking guidance, appliance status, notifications or remote controls. Connected functions differ between manufacturers and models, so check the individual specification if smart functionality is important.
Check the Installation Dimensions
Do not assume that built-in ovens are interchangeable simply because they share a nominal width. Check the appliance dimensions, required cabinet niche, ventilation clearances, connected load and electrical requirements supplied by the manufacturer.
Full-height ovens commonly use a taller cabinet niche than compact cooking appliances, while wider specialist ovens may require different cabinetry even when their cooking functions are otherwise similar.
Built-In Ovens FAQs
What types of built-in oven are available?
Built-in ovens include single ovens, double ovens, compact ovens, conventional electric ovens, gas ovens, steam ovens, combination steam ovens and combination microwave ovens.
What is the difference between a compact oven and a combination oven?
Compact describes the appliance's installation format, while combination describes its cooking functions. A compact oven may use conventional heat, steam, microwave cooking or a combination of technologies.
Is a combination microwave an oven?
A combination microwave can be considered an oven when it provides genuine conventional oven cooking functions such as fan heat or conventional baking as well as microwave operation. A solo microwave without conventional oven functions should instead be treated as a microwave appliance.
What is a pyrolytic oven?
A pyrolytic oven uses a high-temperature cleaning programme to break down grease and cooked-on food residue into ash, which can be wiped away after the programme has finished and the appliance has cooled.
What is the difference between a steam oven and a steam-assisted oven?
A dedicated steam oven uses steam as a primary cooking method. A combination steam oven provides both steam and conventional oven cooking, while a steam-assisted conventional oven introduces moisture during selected baking or roasting programmes.
Can I replace an existing 60cm built-in oven with any other 60cm oven?
No. Nominal width does not guarantee installation compatibility. Always check the required cabinet niche dimensions, ventilation, appliance depth, electrical connection and door clearances for the individual model.
