Use the filters to compare capacity, installation type, spin speed, drying capacity, noise level and smart connectivity where those specifications apply. For built-in appliances, check the full installation dimensions and furniture-door requirements before ordering rather than relying on nominal width alone.

Which laundry appliance do you need?

Washing machines

A washing machine is the best starting point if you normally line-dry clothes or use a separate tumble dryer. Current Appliance Superstore models span approximately 7kg to 12kg wash capacities, with both integrated and freestanding options. Larger drums suit bigger households and bulky loads, but capacity should be chosen around normal washing habits rather than simply selecting the largest available machine.

When comparing washing machines, check drum capacity, maximum spin speed, energy class, noise level and appliance depth. Most current models use a 1400rpm or 1600rpm maximum spin speed. A higher spin speed can remove more water before drying, although the programme and fabric type determine the speed actually used.

Tumble dryers

The current tumble dryer range is centred on heat pump models. Heat pump dryers reuse heat within the drying system rather than continually generating and exhausting hot air, making them suitable for buyers prioritising lower energy use and gentler drying temperatures.

Current models are primarily available with 8kg and 9kg drying capacities. Check drum capacity, programme selection, noise, drainage arrangements, appliance depth and whether the dryer is approved for stacking with your washing machine using the correct manufacturer's stacking kit.

Washer dryers

A washer dryer combines both functions in one appliance and is useful where there is not enough space for separate machines. The important specification is that the drying capacity is normally lower than the washing capacity. Current Appliance Superstore models include combinations such as 8kg wash with 4kg or 5kg dry capacity, 9kg wash with 5kg or 6kg dry capacity, and larger 10kg or 10.5kg washing capacities with up to 6kg drying capacity.

If you regularly tumble-dry full family-sized loads, separate washing and drying appliances usually provide greater drying capacity and allow one load to dry while another is washing. A washer dryer is more space-efficient but requires more attention to the smaller drying-load limit.

Freestanding or integrated laundry appliances?

Freestanding washing machines and washer dryers have a finished exterior and visible control panel and can be positioned beneath a suitable worktop or in a utility room. Integrated models are designed to sit behind a furniture door and require suitable cabinet, hinge and plinth arrangements.

Do not assume that every appliance described as approximately 60cm wide has identical installation requirements. Check the manufacturer's width, height, cabinet depth, hose clearance and door-opening space before purchase. Integrated models also need the correct furniture-door dimensions and hinge positions.

Choosing the right laundry capacity

Appliance Current capacity range What to compare
Washing machine Approximately 7kg to 12kg Wash capacity, spin speed, energy rating, noise and installation type
Tumble dryer 8kg to 9kg Drying capacity, heat pump system, noise, drainage and stacking compatibility
Washer dryer Approximately 7kg to 10.5kg wash and 4kg to 6kg dry Both wash and dry capacities, spin speed, energy rating and installation type

Understanding laundry energy ratings

Compare energy information within the same appliance type rather than treating every laundry energy label as directly interchangeable. Washing machines, washer dryers and tumble dryers have different test methods and labelling requirements. Always use the current energy label and product information supplied for the exact model being considered.

Specialist fabric care

The laundry range also includes specialist garment-care appliances such as the Fisher & Paykel Fabric Care Cabinet. Unlike a tumble dryer, this uses controlled steam, airflow and motionless garment care to refresh, deodorise, sanitise and dry suitable clothing. It should therefore remain clearly identified as a separate fabric-care appliance rather than being classified as a tumble dryer.

Laundry appliance FAQs

What size washing machine should I buy?

Choose capacity around the amount of laundry you normally wash. Current models range from around 7kg to 12kg. Larger drums provide more room for family loads and bulky items, but they are not automatically necessary for smaller households.

What is the difference between a washer dryer and separate appliances?

A washer dryer combines both functions in one cabinet and saves floor space. Its drying capacity is normally lower than its washing capacity. Separate appliances provide greater drying capacity and allow washing and drying to take place at the same time.

Are the tumble dryers heat pump models?

The current Appliance Superstore tumble dryer selection is predominantly heat pump based. Check the individual product specification because technology and programme features vary by model.

Can I stack a washing machine and tumble dryer?

Selected compatible freestanding washing machines and tumble dryers can be stacked, but only with the correct manufacturer-approved stacking kit and installation arrangement. Compatibility should be checked against both exact model numbers.

What is an integrated washing machine?

An integrated washing machine is designed to sit inside fitted cabinetry behind a furniture door. It has different installation and door-fitting requirements from a conventional freestanding washing machine.

What should I measure before buying a laundry appliance?

Measure the available width, height and depth, allowing additional room for hoses, plugs, door opening and ventilation where required. For integrated appliances, also check furniture-door dimensions, hinge positions and plinth requirements.
