Freestanding or integrated washing machine?
A freestanding washing machine has a finished front and can be positioned beneath a suitable worktop or in a utility room, provided there is access to the required water supply, drainage and electrical connection. Check the full appliance depth rather than width alone: doors, hoses and connections can require considerably more space than the cabinet dimensions suggest.
An integrated washing machine is fitted behind a matching furniture door. Check the appliance height, width and depth together with the furniture-door fixing arrangement before ordering. The current Smeg WMI147C, for example, is fully integrated and allows its furniture door to be fitted on either the left or right using adjustable hinges.
Energy efficiency and water use
Washing machines use the current A-to-G energy efficiency scale. The live range includes models across several energy classes, so compare the energy label rather than relying on marketing descriptions alone. Useful figures include weighted energy consumption per 100 Eco 40-60 cycles and water consumption per cycle.
Drum size also matters. A larger-capacity machine can be useful for bulky or high-volume laundry, but choosing the largest drum is not automatically the most efficient choice for every household. Select a capacity that suits the loads you normally wash.
Washing machine noise levels
When comparing noise, use the airborne acoustical noise figure for the spin cycle. Washing-phase and spinning-phase figures are different and should not be mixed in the same comparison filter. A lower spin-noise figure can be useful where the appliance will operate close to kitchens, living areas or bedrooms.
1400rpm or 1600rpm spin speed?
Most machines in the current range have a maximum spin speed of 1400rpm, with selected AEG, Miele and Smeg models offering up to 1600rpm. A faster maximum spin can remove more water from suitable loads, but actual spin speed varies by programme and fabric type. Compare the energy label's spin-drying efficiency class as well as the headline maximum rpm.
Smart washing machines and automatic detergent dosing
Smart connectivity is available on selected models rather than every washing machine from a particular brand. Current connected systems include Bosch Home Connect, Miele@home, Samsung SmartThings and compatible AEG and Fisher & Paykel apps. Depending on the model, these can provide programme monitoring, notifications or remote controls.
Automatic detergent dispensing is also model-specific. Bosch i-DOS, Miele TwinDos and selected Smeg, AEG and Fisher & Paykel systems reduce the need to measure detergent manually by dispensing according to the machine's settings or detected load.
Check washing machine dimensions before ordering
Most of the current machines are approximately 60cm wide, but depth varies more significantly. Allow room for inlet and drain hoses, the mains connection and the open appliance door. For under-worktop installations, also check the required niche height and whether the manufacturer's installation instructions permit the machine to be built under the worktop.

Can I stack a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine?
