Washer Dryers - Freestanding & Integrated

Shop washer dryers from AEG, Miele, Samsung and Smeg, with freestanding and fully integrated models available. The current range combines washing and drying in one appliance, with washing capacities from 7kg to 10kg and drying capacities from 4kg to 6kg.

Compare installation type, washing and drying capacity, spin speed, energy use, noise, dimensions and smart connectivity before choosing. Remember that a washer dryer's drying capacity is usually smaller than its washing capacity, so a full wash load may need to be reduced before drying.

Shop washer dryers by installation type

  • Freestanding washer dryers – the largest part of the current range, with 8kg to 10kg washing capacities and models from AEG, Miele, Samsung and Smeg.
  • Integrated washer dryers – designed to sit behind a kitchen furniture door, including current AEG and Smeg models.

How to choose a washer dryer

A washer dryer combines a washing machine and condenser dryer in one appliance. It is useful where there is not enough room for separate washing and tumble-drying appliances, or where you want the option to wash and dry a suitable load without transferring it between machines.

The most important specification is not washing capacity alone. Compare the washing and drying capacities together, because the maximum drying load is normally smaller.

Compare washing and drying capacity

Wash / dry capacity Current examples What it means
7kg / 4kg Smeg integrated Suitable where built-in installation and a relatively compact load size are the priorities.
8kg / 4kg AEG integrated More washing capacity while retaining a 4kg maximum drying load.
8kg / 5kg AEG, Miele and Samsung A common combination for everyday laundry, with up to 5kg able to continue through the drying cycle.
9kg / 5kg Selected AEG models Provides more washing space while retaining a smaller drying capacity.
9kg / 6kg AEG and Samsung A useful balance where larger loads are regularly washed and up to 6kg needs drying.
10kg / 6kg AEG and Smeg The largest wash capacities in the current range, with a maximum 6kg drying load.

Compare the washer dryer brands currently available

Brand Current models and capacities Features to compare
AEG Integrated and freestanding models from 8kg/4kg to 10kg/6kg Selected 7000 ProSteam models use Steam Refresh and SpecialCare Wash-to-Dry. Higher-specification models add UniversalDose, PowerCare and app connectivity.
Miele WTD165 and WTR860, both 8kg/5kg Both support Miele@home. WTR860 adds TwinDos automatic detergent dispensing, PowerWash, SteamCare and M Touch controls.
Samsung 8kg/5kg and 9kg/6kg Series 5 models Both use ecobubble technology. The newer WD90DG5B15BE adds Wi-Fi, SmartThings and AI Energy Mode, while WD80TA046BX does not support SmartThings.
Smeg 7kg/4kg integrated and 10kg/6kg freestanding The range covers both installation types, with quick-wash, steam and load-management features depending on the model.

Freestanding or integrated washer dryer?

A freestanding washer dryer has a finished appliance front and can be positioned beneath a suitable worktop or in a utility area. Most of the current range is freestanding, giving the widest choice of capacity, controls and connected features.

An integrated washer dryer is installed behind a furniture door. Check the appliance dimensions, cabinet opening and furniture-door fittings carefully before ordering. The current built-in range includes the AEG L7WC84636BI and Smeg WDI14C7-2.

Why is the drying capacity smaller than the washing capacity?

Clothes require more free space inside the drum during tumble drying than during washing. This is why an appliance described as 8kg/5kg can wash up to 8kg but dry no more than 5kg under its rated programme conditions.

If you regularly wash at the machine's full washing capacity and want the entire load dried immediately afterwards, you may need to remove part of the load before starting the drying programme. Where full-size drying capacity is important, separate washing machine and tumble dryer appliances may be more practical.

Washer dryer energy ratings

The energy label provides separate information for washing-only operation and the complete wash-and-dry cycle. These figures can be substantially different, so do not compare washer dryers using the wash-only class alone.

For example, several current AEG and Miele machines are rated A for washing alone but D for the complete wash-and-dry cycle. Compare the complete-cycle energy consumption and water consumption if you expect to use the drying function regularly.

Condenser drying in a washer dryer

The current AEG washer dryers use condenser drying rather than an external vent. Moisture from the drying process is condensed and discharged through the appliance's drainage system. Check the individual specification rather than relying on a generic Heating Technology field, as this data must be stored correctly for each model.

Smart washer dryers

Smart connectivity is model-specific. Current connected models include selected AEG appliances using the AEG app, Miele WTD165 and WTR860 using Miele@home, and Samsung WD90DG5B15BE using SmartThings.

Not every model from the same brand is connected. Samsung WD80TA046BX, for example, does not have embedded Wi-Fi or SmartThings support.

Steam programmes and garment refreshing

Steam functions differ between manufacturers and models. AEG Steam Refresh is intended to refresh suitable garments and reduce creasing without a complete wash. Miele WTR860 includes SteamCare, while Samsung models offer steam-based hygiene programmes. Check whether a feature is a refresh programme, a washing hygiene function or part of a wash-and-dry cycle rather than treating all steam functions as equivalent.

Automatic detergent dispensing

Automatic detergent dosing is available on selected higher-specification models rather than across the whole category. Miele WTR860 uses TwinDos to dispense liquid detergent automatically. AEG UniversalDose is different: it is a detergent drawer designed to improve dissolution of detergent pods and should not be described as automatic detergent dosing.

1400rpm, 1500rpm or 1600rpm?

The current range includes maximum spin speeds from 1400rpm to 1600rpm. A faster maximum spin can remove more water from suitable laundry before drying, but the actual speed used depends on the programme and fabric type.

Compare the spin-efficiency class and rated spin noise alongside maximum rpm. A 1600rpm headline figure alone does not make one washer dryer the better choice.

Check washer dryer dimensions carefully

Width is relatively consistent across the current range at approximately 60cm, but depth varies significantly. Check the manufacturer's maximum depth rather than the cabinet body alone and allow room for water hoses, waste connections, the electrical supply and the open door.

For example, Samsung WD80TA046BX has a 600mm nominal cabinet depth but a stated full depth of 680mm including protruding parts. Miele's current WT1 models are 637mm deep and exceed one metre with the appliance door open.

Washer dryer FAQs

Can a washer dryer wash and dry a full load automatically?

Only where the load does not exceed the machine's drying capacity. Most washer dryers have a larger washing capacity than drying capacity. An 8kg/5kg appliance can wash up to 8kg but can only dry a maximum rated load of 5kg.

Is a washer dryer better than separate appliances?

A washer dryer saves floor space and lets suitable loads wash and dry in one appliance. Separate washing machines and tumble dryers usually provide greater total drying capacity and allow one load to dry while another is washing. The better choice depends mainly on available space and how frequently you tumble dry.

Do washer dryers need a vent?

The condenser washer dryers in the current range do not require an external hot-air vent. They still require the normal water supply, waste connection and electrical supply specified by the manufacturer.

Can I use a washer dryer only as a washing machine?

Yes. Washer dryers include wash-only programmes as well as drying and combined wash-and-dry options. Their energy labels therefore provide separate figures for washing alone and for the complete wash-and-dry cycle.

Are washer dryers smart?

Some are. Connected models currently include selected AEG machines, both listed Miele WT1 models and the Samsung WD90DG5B15BE. Other models, including Samsung WD80TA046BX, do not support app connectivity.

What size washer dryer should I buy?

Compare both capacities rather than choosing on wash capacity alone. If you expect most loads to go directly from washing to drying, the drying capacity is especially important. The current range spans approximately 7kg/4kg to 10kg/6kg.

Can an integrated washer dryer replace a freestanding model?

Only if the installation is designed for it. Integrated models have different cabinetry and furniture-door requirements. Measure the niche and check the manufacturer's installation drawing before ordering.
