Choosing the right built-in oven

Start with the installation space and the type of cooking you do most often. Most products in this range are built-in appliances, but oven dimensions, cavity capacity and electrical requirements vary, so check the individual product specification and cabinet dimensions before ordering.

Single or double oven?

A single oven uses one main cooking cavity and is the most common choice for a standard built-in kitchen layout. Capacity varies considerably, so compare usable litres as well as external dimensions.

A double oven provides two separate cavities, allowing different temperatures or cooking functions to be used at the same time. This can be useful for larger households or for cooking a main dish and accompaniments separately.

Pyrolytic, catalytic or steam cleaning?

Pyrolytic cleaning heats the oven to a very high temperature so food and grease deposits are reduced to ash, which can then be wiped away after the programme finishes.

Catalytic liners absorb and oxidise grease during cooking and reduce the amount of manual cleaning required, although they are not equivalent to a full pyrolytic cycle.

Steam or humidity-assisted cleaning softens deposits using moisture so the cavity can be wiped down more easily.

What do steam-assisted ovens do?

Steam-assisted electric ovens combine conventional oven heat with added moisture. This is different from a dedicated steam oven and can be useful for bread, roasting and reheating where moisture retention matters.

AEG calls this type of technology SteamCrisp on selected models. It combines hot air with steam to help retain moisture while still browning the outside of food. Higher-specification SteamPro models add fuller steam functionality, including steam and combination cooking and, on selected models, sous-vide cooking.

Miele uses features such as Moisture Plus on conventional ovens to add moisture during baking and roasting. Its DGC combination steam ovens go further by combining conventional dry heat, steam and combination cooking in one appliance.

Smart ovens

Selected ovens include Wi-Fi or app connectivity. Smart functions vary by model and can include remote status information, programme selection, cooking guidance and notifications. Check the individual product rather than assuming every model in a particular series has the same connectivity.

Check installation before ordering

Built-in oven dimensions are not interchangeable simply because two models have a similar visible width. Check the appliance dimensions, required cabinet niche, ventilation instructions and electrical connection specified by the manufacturer. Compact combination appliances may also use a shorter niche than a conventional full-height oven.

Built-in ovens FAQs

What is the difference between an oven and an electric oven?

This page covers the wider built-in oven range, including electric ovens, steam ovens, combination steam ovens and selected gas or combination cooking appliances. The electric ovens page is specifically for ovens powered by electricity.

Are most built-in ovens electric?

Yes. The majority of Appliance Superstore's current built-in oven range is electric, including conventional fan ovens, pyrolytic ovens and appliances that combine electric heat with steam.

What is a pyrolytic oven?

A pyrolytic oven uses a high-temperature cleaning programme to break down grease and food residue into ash. It reduces manual scrubbing but the exact programme duration and operating requirements vary by model.

What is a combination steam oven?

A combination steam oven can use steam and conventional oven heat either separately or together. This provides more flexibility than a steam-only appliance and allows the same appliance to handle baking, roasting and steam cooking.

Can I replace one built-in oven with any other 60cm oven?

No. Visible width alone does not guarantee compatibility. Check the manufacturer's niche dimensions, ventilation requirements, electrical supply and appliance depth before replacing an existing oven.
