Choosing the right built-in cooling appliance

Integrated fridges

Choose an integrated fridge if you need dedicated fresh-food storage without a full separate freezer section. The current range includes compact and built-under models for smaller cabinetry, conventional full-height refrigerators around 177cm to 178cm high and larger premium refrigeration.

Some refrigerators include a small internal freezer compartment, but that does not automatically make them equivalent to a conventional split fridge freezer. Compare the actual fresh-food and frozen-food capacities as well as the manufacturer's product classification.

Integrated freezers

Integrated freezers provide dedicated frozen-food storage behind kitchen cabinetry. Current options include built-under models as well as full-height appliances. Compare total freezer capacity, No Frost or manual-defrost operation, niche dimensions, door fixing and door-opening direction.

Integrated fridge freezers

An integrated fridge freezer combines chilled and frozen storage in one built-in appliance. Compare the actual fridge-to-freezer capacity rather than relying only on labels such as 70/30 or 60/40, particularly on wider or large-format appliances.

Current models include standard-width integrated appliances as well as wider and taller products. No Frost and dual-cooling systems are available on selected models, but specifications vary considerably between ranges.

Built-in wine coolers

Built-in wine coolers include under-counter, compact-column and full-height formats. Unlike fully concealed refrigerators, many wine coolers have a visible glass door, so the appliance finish and door swing remain part of the kitchen design.

Compare bottle capacity, temperature zones, installation dimensions, ventilation requirements and hinge direction. A model described as built-under may still require specific ventilation clearances and should not be treated as interchangeable with a standard integrated fridge.

Specialist built-in cooling

The current range also includes specialist appliances such as Smeg blast chillers. A blast chiller is designed to cool or freeze food rapidly and can also provide selected preparation functions. It is a different product type from a domestic refrigerator or freezer and should be compared on its own functions, capacity and installation dimensions.

Built-in cooling sizes and installation

Built-in cooling ranges from approximately 82cm built-under appliances through standard tall integrated refrigeration to large-format products above 188cm high. Widths also vary significantly, so a nominal description such as “60cm” is not sufficient for installation planning.

Always check the manufacturer's stated niche height, width and depth. Allow for ventilation, electrical connections and any plumbing required for water or ice functions. Large integrated refrigeration can require substantially different cabinetry from a standard 177cm tall appliance.

Fixed hinge or sliding hinge?

Integrated refrigeration can use different furniture-door systems. A sliding-hinge appliance uses separate hinges for the furniture door and appliance door, connected by sliding rails. A fixed-hinge or door-on-door appliance carries the furniture front directly on the appliance door.

The two systems are not automatically interchangeable. When replacing an existing integrated fridge, freezer or fridge freezer, identify the current furniture-door arrangement and check the new appliance's installation instructions before purchase.

Door direction and panel-ready refrigeration

Many conventional integrated appliances have reversible doors, but some premium refrigeration models are supplied in dedicated left-hinge or right-hinge configurations. Panel-ready appliances may accept matching kitchen cabinetry or optional manufacturer door panels depending on the model.

Do not select solely by appliance width. Door swing, adjacent walls, handles, furniture thickness and the space required to open drawers or internal shelves can all affect whether a model is suitable for a particular kitchen.

Capacity, noise and energy use

Compare capacity in litres within the same appliance type. A large refrigerator may devote almost all of its volume to chilled storage, while an integrated fridge freezer divides capacity between two compartments. Wine coolers are more usefully compared by bottle capacity and temperature-zone layout as well as litres.

Noise is particularly relevant in open-plan kitchens. Current built-in cooling products include models operating in the low-to-high 30dB range, but check the exact model specification rather than assuming that two appliances from the same range have identical noise output.

Current refrigeration energy labels use the A to G scale. Compare the energy class and stated annual consumption for the exact appliance, particularly when comparing products with substantially different capacities.
