Miele AutoDos vs Dishwasher Tablets

Is Miele AutoDos worth it, or should you use ordinary dishwasher tablets? AutoDos automatically dispenses detergent from a Miele PowerDisk during compatible programmes, reducing the need to add detergent before every wash. Conventional tablets offer greater choice over detergent brands and make it easier to control how much you spend per cycle.

AutoDos is available on selected Miele G7000 dishwashers, but not every G7000 model includes it. Importantly, an AutoDos dishwasher can also use suitable dishwasher tablets or powder through its normal detergent compartment when automatic dispensing is switched off. This guide compares convenience, detergent costs, cleaning performance and maintenance to help you choose the right dishwasher.

Miele AutoDos vs Dishwasher Tablets: Key Differences

Feature AutoDos with PowerDisk Conventional Dishwasher Tablets
Detergent dispensing Automatic during compatible programmes Tablet added manually before each wash
Detergent format Miele PowerDisk detergent cartridge Suitable dishwasher tablets
Detergent quantity Adjusted by the dishwasher Usually one tablet per wash, following product instructions
Detergent choice PowerDisk required for automatic dispensing Choice of compatible brands and formulations
Replacement frequency Approximately 20 cycles per PowerDisk on average Before each wash
Ongoing cost Depends on PowerDisk price and consumption Depends on tablet price
Maintenance PowerDisk compartment and dispensing system require attention Normal detergent-compartment cleaning
Best suited to Frequent washing and automatic convenience Detergent flexibility and straightforward operation

Our recommendation: Choose AutoDos if you run your dishwasher frequently and value not having to add detergent for every load. Choose conventional tablets if you prefer selecting your own detergent, want a simpler dispensing arrangement or are particularly concerned about ongoing detergent costs.

Shop Miele Dishwashers With and Without AutoDos

Our current Miele dishwasher selection includes G5000 models with conventional detergent dispensing and selected G7000 models with AutoDos. Some G7000 appliances also use conventional detergent dispensing, so check the individual specification rather than relying on the range name alone.

How Does Miele AutoDos Work?

AutoDos is Miele's automatic detergent-dispensing system for compatible dishwashers. It uses a circular PowerDisk cartridge containing detergent granules, which the appliance dispenses during selected washing programmes.

The dishwasher adjusts dispensing according to its programme settings, removing the need to measure detergent or insert a tablet before every compatible wash. One PowerDisk typically lasts for approximately 20 cycles, although this varies with programme selection and detergent consumption.

AutoDos is particularly convenient for households that run their dishwasher regularly. Instead of preparing the detergent for every load, you replace the PowerDisk when required.

Can You Use Normal Dishwasher Tablets in a Miele AutoDos Dishwasher?

Yes. Miele dishwashers equipped with AutoDos also have a conventional detergent compartment. Automatic dispensing can be deactivated so that suitable dishwasher tablets or powder can be added manually.

This means you can buy an AutoDos dishwasher without using PowerDisk for every wash. You may prefer conventional tablets for occasional programmes, when you want to use a different detergent or when you have run out of PowerDisks.

Dishwasher tablets must be placed in the conventional detergent compartment, not inside the PowerDisk dispensing system. Follow the operating instructions for the exact appliance and detergent being used.

How Much Does Miele PowerDisk Cost per Wash?

PowerDisk offers automatic convenience, but its ongoing cost should be considered alongside conventional dishwasher tablets. The fairest comparison is the detergent cost per cycle rather than the price of an individual cartridge or a large box of tablets.

For PowerDisk, divide the purchase price by the approximate number of cycles it provides. If buying a multipack, divide the total pack price by the combined number of expected cycles. For tablets, divide the box price by the number of tablets, assuming one tablet is used per wash.

PowerDisk vs Dishwasher Tablets: Worked Cost Example

Detergent Illustrative Pack Price Approximate Cycles Cost per Cycle
Six Miele PowerDisks £60 120 50p
180 Miele dishwasher tablets £60 180 33p

These are illustrative figures based on approximately £60 pack prices, not guaranteed current retail prices. The PowerDisk calculation assumes around 20 cycles per cartridge, while the tablet calculation assumes one tablet per wash. Actual PowerDisk consumption varies, and promotional prices, subscriptions and detergent choices can change the comparison.

Under these example conditions, conventional tablets cost less per wash. However, AutoDos adjusts the amount of detergent dispensed, and the convenience of automatic dosing may justify the difference for some households.

Does AutoDos Clean Better Than Dishwasher Tablets?

AutoDos is designed to dispense a suitable quantity of detergent at the appropriate stage of compatible programmes. This can help reduce the problems associated with using too much or too little manually measured detergent.

However, AutoDos does not automatically guarantee better cleaning than a suitable dishwasher tablet. Results also depend on the programme, detergent formulation, water hardness, loading arrangement and level of soiling.

Miele G5000 dishwashers with conventional detergent dispensing still offer effective everyday cleaning programmes, including QuickPowerWash on current models. Choosing AutoDos is therefore primarily a decision about convenience and automatic detergent management rather than a requirement for good cleaning results.

Does Miele AutoDos Require Maintenance?

Yes. The PowerDisk compartment and automatic dispensing system require occasional cleaning and checks. Detergent powder can clump if moisture enters the dispensing mechanism, potentially affecting operation.

Miele provides model-specific instructions for checking the PowerDisk holder, cleaning the dispensing channel and keeping the relevant components dry. The dishwasher may also display a fault message if detergent cannot be dispensed correctly.

Conventional detergent compartments also need routine cleaning, but they do not have the additional PowerDisk dispensing mechanism. If you prefer minimal detergent-system maintenance, a non-AutoDos dishwasher may be the simpler option.

Which Miele Dishwashers Have AutoDos?

Within our current collection, AutoDos is available on selected G7000 dishwashers. Models with automatic dispensing include the freestanding G 7040 SC AutoDos and fully integrated G 7080 SCVi AutoDos, alongside more advanced G7000 appliances.

Miele Model Installation AutoDos Why Consider It?
G 5811 SC Active Plus Freestanding No Conventional detergent with core G5000 features
G 7040 SC AutoDos Freestanding Yes Automatic dosing and connected convenience
G 5851 SCVi Active Plus Fully integrated No Conventional detergent in a fitted kitchen
G 7080 SCVi AutoDos Fully integrated Yes Automatic dosing behind a furniture door

These four dishwashers provide useful examples of automatic and conventional detergent dispensing in comparable installation formats. However, their specifications differ in other ways, including connectivity and basket arrangements, so any price difference cannot be attributed to AutoDos alone.

Is Miele AutoDos Worth the Extra Money?

AutoDos can be worthwhile if you run your dishwasher frequently, want consistent automatic dispensing and prefer replacing a PowerDisk periodically instead of adding detergent before each load.

Conventional tablets may be preferable if you want greater freedom to choose detergent brands, regularly purchase discounted tablets or do not mind adding detergent manually. They also avoid the additional maintenance associated with the PowerDisk dispensing system.

When comparing Miele dishwashers, consider the complete appliance specification. An AutoDos model may also include connected functionality, different basket arrangements or additional programmes, so the choice should not depend on detergent dispensing alone.

Choose AutoDos If...

  • You run your dishwasher frequently and value automatic convenience.
  • You prefer not to measure or add detergent before every compatible wash.
  • You are comfortable purchasing PowerDisks and maintaining the dispensing system.
  • You want an AutoDos-equipped G7000 model with other features that suit your kitchen.

Choose Conventional Dishwasher Tablets If...

  • You prefer choosing between different suitable detergent brands.
  • You want to control detergent spending by shopping for multipacks or offers.
  • You are happy to place a tablet in the detergent compartment before each wash.
  • You do not need automatic dispensing or would prefer a simpler detergent system.

Miele AutoDos vs Dishwasher Tablets FAQs

Can I use normal dishwasher tablets in a Miele AutoDos dishwasher?

Yes. AutoDos can be switched off so suitable dishwasher tablets or powder can be used through the conventional detergent compartment. Follow the operating instructions for your model.

How long does a Miele PowerDisk last?

Miele states that a PowerDisk typically provides enough detergent for approximately 20 dishwasher cycles. The actual number varies according to programme selection and detergent consumption.

Do all Miele G7000 dishwashers have AutoDos?

No. AutoDos is available on selected G7000 models. Our current G7000 collection also includes conventional-dosing appliances such as the G 7210 SCi and G 7380 SCVi FF.

Can I refill a Miele PowerDisk with ordinary dishwasher detergent?

Use PowerDisk products intended for the AutoDos system and follow Miele's operating instructions. Ordinary tablets and loose detergent intended for manual dispensing should be used in the conventional detergent compartment, not substituted inside the PowerDisk mechanism.

Do I still need dishwasher salt and rinse aid with AutoDos?

PowerDisk All in 1 detergent includes additional dishwasher-care components, but water-softener salt and rinse aid requirements depend on the appliance, local water hardness, settings and the detergent being used. Follow the dishwasher's instructions and refill indicators rather than assuming these products are never required.
